Lumir reduces construction emissions
There is a lot of talk about low-carbon construction and its necessity in climate change mitigation, and we can offer a solution in the form of a carbon-negative Lumir Comfort acoustic coating. Our coating does not burden the environment at all and, on the contrary, has a positive environmental impact.
Acoustic materials have a surprisingly large impact on reducing the carbon footprint of construction. At the same time as we create built environments that are more pleasant for people, we help our customers achieve their own environmental goals cost-effectively. Read more on the Responsibility page.
On this page you will find information about the practical implementation of the Lumir acoustics project and calculations to support the procurement decision.
Let’s build durable and naturally sounding environments together.
Lumir installation and support
- Spraying work is carried out by Lumir-trained partners
- Acoustic boards are most often installed by the suspended ceiling contractor according to the instructions received from Lumir. If preferred, we can also agree that this work is included in the Lumir contract
- We offer all the necessary support from design to actual implementation. Lumir’s own acoustician always supports the acoustics of the site
- In the implementation phase, we guide you in the right details
- You can find installation instructions, technical drawings and details in our document library. If you can’t find the right information, ask us for more information

Lumir Comfort acoustic coating directly on hard surfaces without acoustic boards
- Lumir´s acoustic solutions cannot be ruined by installation, because the coating works itself as sound absorbent. Therefore, acoustic boards are not always needed at all.
- The acoustic results of the Newsec office space with the cup vaulted ceiling in the picture can be viewed here
- The acoustic design of the walls of the Aalto University staircase is another good example of installing our coating directly on a hard surface. Watch a video of the change here
- Lumir’s acoustic solutions, where acoustic boards Lumir Board (LB) or Lumir Wool (LW) are used under Lumir Comfort acoustic coating and typical suspended ceiling structures, are specified on our Products page
Questions and answers
In the installation work of the acoustic boards, the aim is to obtain a flat surface, i.e. the boards must not tooth. The largest gaps should be max. 3 mm. It is strictly forbidden to use acrylic masses in seams. If necessary, Masa adhesive mass of ceiling colour can be used in small gaps, otherwise no other sealants will be used. When cutting Lumir Wool (LW) glass wool sheets, the edges must be carefully painted. The boards are installed on the butt and proceed like parquet lay-up. Do not overtighten the screws so that they press inside the LW material. Download the complete installation instructions below. More details and instructions are found from our Document Library.

Installation instructions for Lumir Board (LB)
For example, if a drying crack appears on the wall, then the Lumir Comfort coating will not crack. Finnish long-fibre softwood, which is a tough and slightly elastic material, is used as a raw material for the coating. If, for example, the wall will crack due to foundation failure, for example, and probably the Lumir coating will crack as well. Lumir acoustic solutions have been used, for example, to create suspended ceilings that are dangled several meters and are almost “floating” structures. And even after years, cracks have not been found in these. Lumir coating has also been applied directly to hollow-core slabs without cracks.
LB is perforated gypsum board and their stiffening properties are not calculated in the Nordic countries. The same material can be used as a rigid structure in Central Europe. We have implemented projects where the wooden truss structures of the upper floor have first been stiffened “crosswise” with metal rims and then with Lumir Board. If the roof floor needs to act as air sound insulation, for example, in areas zoned for aircraft noise zones, it is recommended to use various types of solid gypsum board for the purpose.
Lumir Comfort vs Traditional Acoustic Solutions –
How to achieve the same acoustics while saving nature and costs?
Example: lobby acoustics – starting point and solution
The starting point of the design: approximately 500 m2 of Class A sound-absorbing material (approximately 60% of the ceiling area) is planned for the lobby. A traditional acoustic solution would be to install mineral-based acoustic boards and a seamless coating such as Lumir or competing coating/plaster on the suspended ceiling.
Lumir solution: Lumir Comfort coating is sprayed onto the same 500 m2 ceiling area without other acoustic base materials (lightweight structure) and an additional 125 m2 onto the wall surface. This cannot be achieved with competing products, because Lumir Comfort works itself as sound absorbent and is well suited for wall surfaces both technically and aesthetically.
Result: The same or even better room acoustics can be achieved in the space with class D acoustic material, because the absorption material has been placed in the space in a resource-wise manner.
Benefits in cost, environmental impact and installation
Cost savings: omitting acoustic base material, such as mineral wool, brings savings in work and materials. There is no need to trowel and paint surfaces before Lumir coating. As a result, the Lumir Comfort acoustic coating for an area of 625 m2 vs 500 m2 acoustics with mineral wool in the adjacent example becomes more cost-effective for the customer.
Environment: In the example, the Lumir surfaces in the lobby area bind 750 kg of carbon dioxide, which means that these surfaces act as long-term carbon storages and the overall environmental impact is positive.
Benefits of installation work: a cost-saving installation process also saves project time. Lumir acoustics cannot be ruined by installation work, because our coating, unlike competing products, is already acoustic by itself.
