Lumir acoustics bend to all shapes and colours

Each space is unique and requires a customized approach to sound absorption.
Lumir offers designers a service that ensures spaces have natural acoustic properties that support users well-being and productivity.

Lumir acoustic solutions always support the architectural and interior design of the space. Lumir knows aesthetic room acoustics and we leave the design freedom to you.

Lumir’s natural soundscape for historical premises

In sites of cultural and historical significance, the acoustics must blend in particularly well with the original architecture. Excellent Lumir references from these categories are Helsinki’s newest five-star Hotel Grand Hansa, and the several of Lumir’s acoustic works for Alvar Aalto designed spaces.

Over the years, Lumir has sprayed numerous sites protected by the Finnish Heritage Agency. We always help with the details, whether it is the preservation of old roof paintings on the edges of the Lumir suspended ceiling or other important details.

Hotel Grand Hansa and Lumir soundscape

The new Student House, the traditional hotel Seurahuone and Hansa House are now a new five-star hotel NH Collecion Grand Hansa, opened in May 2024.

The hotel premises are protected by the Finnish Heritage Agency and the Lumir acoustic ceilings were adapted to match the original historical colours.

Lumir Comfort in all colours

Our competitive advantage is a very flexible use of colour:

  • A good design starting point is to check the suitability of our white colours RAL9016 and RAL9010. Most Lumir acoustic ceilings are made in RAL9016
  • If you prefer a different colour for your project (such as Tikkurila Piruetti V419 in the picture), we will work samples for you in our colour laboratory for approval before acoustic coating
  • Lumir’s smooth and spray surfaces look slightly different in the same colour because of the different finish. See more details in our Products
  • Lumir surface is always a slightly porous and living material. The Lumir surface should never be assumed to be identical to the adjacent paint surface. The texture of the surface always contributes to the perceived shade
  • Lumir Comfort coating is always through-dyed, which means it is very resistant to minor dents without losing colour and the surface can be easily lightly sanded to repair minor surface damages
  • Surfaces that are susceptible to dirt are finished with Lumir CLEEN – a dirt-repellent coating

Lumir and wall acoustics in offices – EduCity, Turku

Offices and meeting rooms can be acoustically treated without acoustic boards or T-grid systems. We always make creative use of wall surfaces in all our room acoustic design. As a general principle, acoustics is always enhanced when there are several sound absorbing surfaces in a room – not only ceilings.

The use of walls offer the designer a great opportunity to add colour to the space, so Lumir solves both the room acoustic challenge and finishes the surfaces without painting.

Lumir in restaurants – The Rook bistropub, Helsinki

Lumir acoustically treated the ceilings of this stunning, beautiful old building, both in the restaurant, on the bar side and in the secret cabinet behind the bookshelf. The colours are dramatic dark grey and red.

The interior of the Rook is designed by the interior design agency Fyra.
The style was inspired by the very popular Netflix TV series Peaky Blinders, set in 1919 in Birmingham, England.

What do architects and designers say about Lumir?

University of Vaasa – Luotsi library

“The geometrically complex “origami” roof creates space and, as an architectural element, makes the building public. It also has several functional qualities; it diffuses daylight, dampens sound and conceals technical installations, making the space a place for the discovery of knowledge that is perceived as intact, emphasising sustainable everyday life. We are very pleased with the end result and the excellent finish” – Kimmo Lintula / Arkkitehtitoimisto K2S Oy.

The House of Science and Letters, Helsinki

“The colour tones of the acoustic coatings were quite well matched to the 1920s, nuanced colours of the House of Science, and this allows the coatings to blend in naturally with the interiors.
I would emphasise that the final result required several experiments.
It would not have been possible to achieve a good result based on colour codes alone, but it took time and effort to work with the colour models – and that’s where the cooperation with Lumir was very smooth.” – Jaakko Penttilä/Vilhelm Helander, Juha Leiviskä, architects SAFA.

Ark-Byroo Architects

Architect Marianna Heikinheimo, who specialises in renovation, was very pleased when Lumir Comfort was sprayed directly onto the firewall in Ark-Byro’ s office renovation, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the space.
According to Marianna, Lumir’s acoustic solution was a great combination of excellent acoustics, visual appeal, technical solutions and ecology.

NOAN Architects

Architect Teemu Paasiaho:
“We were looking for a suitable acoustic solution for a prestigious building that would preserve the architecturally stunning curved shapes of our office space. Lumir met our requirements perfectly.”

Questions and answers

Even at its smoothest, the Lumir surface is a slightly porous and living surface material. The product’s acoustic properties are based on the inherent porosity of wood fibres, which makes cellulose an excellent acoustic material. The texture of the Lumir surface can be smoothed into a very smooth looking ceiling or wall surface or left as a rough, spray-applied surface.

In principle, yes, but the perceived tone is always influenced by the texture of the surface, which with Lumir is a slightly porous acoustic matt surface. In addition, the angles of incidence of the light must be taken into account, especially if the paintwork coincides with the Lumir surface at an angle. We always deliver samples for approval before coating.
